Road House plot summary

Elwood Dalton, a troubled ex-UFC fighter, earns a living by deceiving fighters in the underground scene. Frankie, the owner of a rowdy roadhouse in Glass Key, Florida, offers him a job as the head bouncer. Initially hesitant, Dalton accepts the offer after narrowly escaping a suicide attempt involving a freight train that wrecks his car. He travels by coach bus to Frankie’s establishment, known as ‘The Road House,’ and strikes up a friendship with Charlie, a teenage bookstore owner along with her father, Stephen. At The Road House, Dalton defends against a motorcycle gang working for local crime boss Ben Brandt and helps the injured thugs get medical attention, where he meets Ellie, a doctor who treats his wounds. Living in Frankie’s unused houseboat, Dalton mentors the other bouncers and becomes well-liked by the community. After surviving an assassination attempt by gang leader Dell, Dalton confronts him at his houseboat, leading to a fatal encounter with a crocodile that had previously devoured the owner’s pomeranian. Knox, a recently released mafia enforcer, is tasked by Brandt’s incarcerated father to track down Dalton. Following a surprising date with Ellie, Dalton is threatened by Sheriff ‘Big Dick’ to leave town, but he refuses and is later rescued by Ellie, who is revealed to be the sheriff’s daughter. Ellie discloses her father’s collaboration with Brandt, who has inherited his father’s drug empire. Brandt provokes Dalton about his past, including a UFC fight where Dalton killed his opponent in a fit of rage. Knox arrives with Brandt’s men, leading to a chaotic bar brawl that leaves Dalton severely injured. Frankie reveals Brandt’s plans to develop a resort by acquiring properties, with her being the only holdout. Dalton decides to depart but discovers Charlie and Stephen in the hospital after their bookstore is torched by Brandt’s henchmen. Enraged, Dalton takes matters into his own hands, framing a sheriff’s Deputy for a murder linked to Brandt’s illicit cash delivery. The sheriff informs Dalton that Brandt has kidnapped Ellie and demands a ransom. Dalton commandeers Ellie’s ex-boyfriend’s motorboat to confront Brandt on his yacht, leading to a series of confrontations and a dramatic showdown that results in Brandt’s demise. As the Glass Key community rebuilds, Dalton bids farewell to Charlie before leaving town on a coach bus. Stephen finds a trunk of cash left by Dalton, a gesture of gratitude for their friendship. In a post-credits scene, Knox, who survived the fight, causes chaos at the hospital before departing in a hospital gown.
