The Mechanic

The Mechanic, a 2011 action thriller movie helmed by Simon West, features a cast including Jason Statham, Ben Foster, Tony Goldwyn, Donald Sutherland, James Logan, Mini Andén, Jeff Chase, and Christa Campbell. Lewis John Carlino and Richard Wenk are credited as the writers of this remake of the 1972 film with the same title. Starring as Arthur Bishop, Statham portrays a skilled hitman who specializes in staging his assassinations to appear as accidents, suicides, or the work of small-time criminals.

The Mechanic Plot Summary

Hitman Arthur Bishop infiltrates the residence of a Colombian cartel leader and submerges him in his own pool. Upon his return to Louisiana, he meets with his trusted confidant Harry McKenna. Bishop is then tasked by his employer Dean to eliminate Harry. Dean discloses to Bishop about a botched operation in South Africa, where multiple assassins perished, a secret known only to Dean and Harry. Reluctantly, Bishop eliminates Harry and stages it as a car theft. At Harry’s funeral, Bishop encounters Harry’s son Steve, whom he prevents from attacking a potential car thief in a fit of rage. Steve requests Bishop to train him as an assassin; he starts a routine of taking a chihuahua to a coffee shop daily, attracting the attention of his target, the assassin Burke. As Steve establishes his routine, Bishop takes him to observe a contract killing. Burke eventually invites Steve for drinks. Disregarding Bishop’s advice to incapacitate Burke with Rohypnol, Steve accompanies him to his apartment. When Burke tries to strangle him with a belt after undressing, imitating Bishop, Steve struggles but eventually manages to kill him after a prolonged struggle. Dean disapproves of Bishop involving Steve, breaching contract rules. Bishop’s next target is cult leader Andrew Vaughn, planning to induce a heart attack with adrenaline, leading paramedics to administer a fatal dose of epinephrine. However, Vaughn’s doctor administers ketamine, inhibiting the adrenaline’s effects. They opt to suffocate Vaughn instead. After eliminating Vaughn, they are caught by guards, leading to a shootout before escaping separately. At the airport, Bishop encounters a hitman who was meant to be eliminated in the mission Harry allegedly betrayed. The hitman discloses that Dean orchestrated the failed mission to conceal his illicit activities. Bishop realizes Dean framed Harry, leading him to unintentionally kill him. After defeating Dean’s henchmen who ambushed him, Bishop discovers Steve under attack at the safehouse. Steve overcomes his assailants, finds his father’s gun, and learns Bishop was responsible for his father’s death. Bishop and Steve confront and eliminate Dean. While refueling, Steve detonates the truck, seemingly with Bishop inside. Steve returns to Bishop’s place and defies his instructions by playing a record and taking Bishop’s 1966 Jaguar E-Type. As he drives off, Steve finds a note from Bishop stating, “Steve, If you’re reading this, you’re dead. (Bishop).” Steve chuckles before the car explodes. Another blast destroys Bishop’s safehouse. Security footage at the gas station reveals Bishop escaped the truck before the explosion, fleeing in another vehicle.
