The Monuments Men
Based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history, The Monuments Men is an action drama focusing on seven over-the-hill, out-of-shape museum directors, artists, architects, curators, and art historians who went to the front lines of WWII to rescue the world’s artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and return them to their rightful owners. With the art hidden behind enemy lines, how could these guys hope to succeed?
Synopsis: In 1943, during World War II, the Allies are making good progress in pushing back the Axis powers in Italy. However, Frank Stokes (George Clooney) convinces the American president that victory will mean little if the artistic treasures of Western civilization are lost in the fighting, whether as collateral damage or through looting. To minimize this threat, Stokes is ordered to assemble an army unit called the Monument Men. The unit is divided for different goals with varying degrees of success.
He sees himself hindered in his work by combat units on his own side who refuse to limit his tactical options for reasons of preserving the architecture. The team learns that the works of art are stored in several mines and castles, and also learns that they must now compete against the Soviet Union, whose own units confiscate the works of art as war reparations. Ultimately, the team has some success, discovering at least one mine containing over 16,000 works of art, as well as grotesque hiding places such as barrels containing gold teeth from death camp victims. The team evacuates as much art as possible, including the sculpture that Jeffries died defending in
before the Soviets arrived.
